Charles Edward Smith was the eldest of 4 brothers. His younger brothers were Alan, Brian and Barry.
They orginally came from West Bromwich, West Midlands. At a very young age the four brothers were
orphaned, my grandparents died in their late twenty's. My grandfather was Charles and my
grandmother was Martha (nee Hayfield). I never knew them, but from what my dad has told me, they
died from T.B. When my grandmother passed away, the four small boys were left in the care of my
grandfather. The family were very poor and my grandfather could not cope with the young boys, and
sadly they were all put into care. They all got adopted, but Uncle Charlie being the eldest could
not settle with anyone, and lived in foster homes until his late teens. They all lost touch, my dad
had no idea where his brothers had gone. Then out of the blue, Uncle Charlie tracked my dad down,
and they shared a good strong brotherly relationship for the past 50 years. My dad has not seen his
other 2 brothers for sixty odd years and we often wonder where they are and where they live. I
understand that Brian lives in the Dudley Area somewhere and changed his name to Naylor when he was
adpoted. We have no idea where Barry is. Uncle Charlie never had any children of his own, and he
thought the world of his nephew and 3 nieces. We loved him dearly. Sadly in August last year uncle
Charlies health started to go down hill, and he never gained the strength to recover. Sadly on the
12th September 2006 in Russells Hall Hospital, Dudley, at 12.48pm a golden heart stopped beating,
and Uncle Charlie passed away. Dad, myself ,Beat (uncle Charlie's partner) and Beat's
brother Alfie was with him, he was not alone. As uncle Charlie left this world - he called out to
his mother . He passed peacefully, I truely believe she was waiting for him on the other side after
all these years. We had The Hollies played at his funeral as we went into church. My dad, brother
and two of Uncle Charlie's friends were bearers. His coffin was draped with the West Bromwich
Albion Flag - he had always supported the Baggies - he was a loyal supporter. God he would have been
so proud that day !! Only the best for our uncle. WE LOVE YOU UNCLE CHARL, GOD BLESS XX

hesitate to contact me.
